Senior Director, Peptide Therapeutics

Who We Are

The Department of Peptide Therapeutics oversees two technology platforms, disulfide-constrained peptides (DCPs) and macrocyclic peptides (MCPs), which are key drug-discovery modalities for gRED's research pipeline. These two modalities complement our existing drug discovery armamentarium and provide unique capabilities to drug targets that are challenging with our traditional small molecule or antibody approaches. Achieving the Department's Mission is critical for Genentech's drug discovery capabilities as these novel approaches complement our existing biotherapeutics and small-molecule drug discovery platforms, and provide us with a significant competitive advantage.The candidate will report to the Vice President of Early Discovery Biochemistry, and will serve as a member of the Joint Research Committees on external collaborations focused on novel peptide therapeutic modalities.

Who You Are

  • You will Create and oversee long-term strategy for technology investments to develop new peptide-based therapeutic and diagnostic modalities essential for next-generation near- and long-term drug discovery platforms.

  • Collaborates with Pharma Partnering to create strategic vision and identify external partnerships in the areas of peptide therapeutic discovery and technology, and intracellular delivery technology.

  • Leads gRED internal peptide therapeutics modality strategy.

  • Partners with gRED Computational Sciences to address gRED peptide therapeutics informatics needs.

  • You will provide guidance to VP-Early Discovery Biochemistry on next-generation peptide therapeutics discovery modalities.

  • Represents department at Research Review Committee, Research Leadership Team and Research Portfolio Review.

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Leads Department of Peptide therapeutics with a team of ~ 25 internal FTEs and ~25 globally distributed contingent staff, to deliver new peptide therapeutics for targeting challenging-to-drug proteins.

  • Accountable for critical matrix-leadership of project teams or broader organization.

  • Oversees internal and external budget.

  • Represents gRED on Joint Research Committees on external collaborations focused on novel peptide therapeutic modalities.

  • Lead contact for Pharma Partnering to identify and oversee strategic external partnerships in the areas of peptide therapeutic discovery and technology, and intracellular deliver technology.

  • Facilitate partnerships across gRED and pRED to maximize the therapeutic potential of peptide therapeutic modalities in order to "drug the undruggable".

Qualifications:

  • Internationally renowned leader in peptide drug discovery technologies as supported by a consistent and strong record of peer-reviewed publications.

  • MD, PhD, DVM or equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in drug discovery and development, with minimum 3 years experience in a Director role.

  • Ability to define long-term strategies for discovery and optimization of peptides in order to 'drug' increasingly more challenging therapeutic targets.

  • Strong collaboration skills and experience at successfully influencing stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication skills and experience with change management.

  • Experience managing/mentoring personnel as demonstrated by successful career advancement of employees.

  • External recognition as leader in peptide therapeutic discovery as evidenced by external speaking invitations at conferences/institutions.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $207,600 and $385,500 of hiring range. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
