Job Description

Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of full time experience as a plumber under a skilled journeyman which provides training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. The Trades Generalist performs journey level work in Plumbing and semi-skilled level work in Carpentry. Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to supervise and train assigned subordinate personnel.

Brief Descriptions of Duties: The Trades Generalist performs journeyman plumbing in the installation, alteration and repair of pipes, fittings and fixtures in heating, ventilation, heating controls, water and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes. The secondary trade is Carpentry. The Trades Generalist will need to have knowledge of OSHA, PESH, and Safety Regulations. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Use and maintain tools, machines, equipment and materials used in the carpentry, plumbing trades and install plumbing fixtures and appliances. Use and maintain tools, machines, equipment and materials used in the plumbing, carpentry and related trades. Work with a variety of materials in addition to wood, sheet metal, wallboard, plastics, aluminum, pipes, sinks, showers, baths, commodes, drinking fountains, dishwashers, valves including pneumatic controls, gas and water heaters and other gas appliances, heating systems and controls and various steam equipment. Install and repair ceiling, floor tiles, walks, doors, and door hardware. Perform the physical tasks required of a trade's person, such as bending, lifting, stretching, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and being able to work in small areas.
  • Conduct inspection for the facility to determine maintenance needs and recommend priorities for repair based maintenance problems. Working knowledge of the math of the craft trades. Plan, layout and complete varied plumbing and carpentry work. Inspect all connections and other parts of systems for leaks. Repair and maintain piping systems and plumbing fixtures.
  • Prioritize, plan and layout work for new installations, and alteration to existing installations and repair consistent with building codes, also reading blue prints and plans. Open clogged drains with plumbing equipment.
  • Estimate materials and labor required to complete a project. Plan new installations alteration to existing installations and major repairs consistent with specifications and plumbing and carpentry codes.
  • Replace defective pipe by cutting, bending, threading and assembling pipe. Understand and carry out written and verbal instructions. Resolve most job related problems that may arise.
  • Implement and enforce safety procedures and standards.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
